Sukhumbhand Paribatra

M.R.Sukhumhand Paribatra is Governor of Bangkok
Since 1996 M.R.Sukhumhand Paribatra has been a MP of Democrat Party, serving as deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs  between 1997 and 2001.He was deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Standing Committee for Foreign Affairs in 2005-2006.Between 2002 and 2004 he was Chairman of the Council of Asian Liberal and Democrats (CALD),an organization of political parties, institutions  and individuals working together to promote liberal and democratic  values and beliefs in Asia. At present he is Deputy Secretary General of the Democrat Party.
Born in September 1952,he was educated outside of Thailand from the age of ten, mostly in England ,and received degrees from Pembroke College, Oxford University, and Georgetown University,  Washington D.C. Before being  elected to Parliament, he was an associate professor at the Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University between 1980  and 1996 ,co-founding the Institute
Of security and International Studies ,for which he served as Director between 1987 and 1993. His research interests focused on Thailand `s foreign and security policies, Southeast Asian regional security issues and Thai politics,subjects on which he was widely published both in Thailand and abroad.

While he was at  Chulalongkorn University ,his academically-related responsibilities included positions as Advisor to the House of Representatives Standing Committee for Foreign Affaires (1986-1988 and 1989-1991),Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister General Chatichai Choonhavan (1988-1989), Advisor to the House of Representatives Standing Committee for House  Affaires(1989-1991).and Chairman of Ministry of Commerce`s Advisory committee on International Commerce(1992-1993).In addition ,he has chaired a number of International panels and study groups, working on specific areas of Southeast Asian regional cooperation .He was an Executive Committee Member of the Social Science Association of Thailand between 1983 and 1992,holding  the   posts of both Vice president and President of the Association. He was a member of the International  Council of the Asia Society, New York, and since 1986 has been a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, London.

Since 1986 he has been the chairman of the Chumhot –Pantip  Foundation, one of Thailand`s largest private philanthropic institutions, working in the fields of education ,scholarships, art and culture ,conservation and public  health .since 1999 ,he has served as Chairman S.E.A. Write Award  Organizing Committee ,the only regional literary awards in South East Asia. In  2005 ,he received an Honorable Doctorate of Science in Agricultural Resources and Environmental Management from Maejo University ,Chiang Mai.
